I was brought onto what would become a 7 person team from A&M who packed up and headed to the Autodesk Build Space in Boston for a summer to design and build a modular, interlocking, 2 man deployable, minimal waste, 5m arched/vaulted structure. I was in charge of all the robot programming and did a considerable amount of the design and development.
Traditional CNC subtractive method for extracting such a complicated form produces a large amount of waste material.
Load testing and joint design done digitally and parametrically in Rhino/Grasshopper and Fusion 360 before moving to full scale prototype pieces.
Hot wire transformative design resulting in minimal waste. This process is impossible without a flexible automated platform like a robot arm.
